THE JAZZ NETWORK FOUNDATIONS RECEIVES A BOOST TO STRENGTHEN JAZZ IN DETROIT WITH ITS NEW PROGRAM – JAZZ-OFF DETROIT

DETROIT, MI-- The Jazz Network Foundation will launch a new program to expand Detroit's Jazz scene, with funding from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. to transform the Jazz scene in Detroit with a new program called, Jazz-Off Detroit.

TrumpetJazz-off Detroit is a competition where winning instrumentalists and vocalists will join to create a performance band. The best piano, drum, horn, and bass players and vocalists will form one of two winning bands—one for younger musicians and one for more mature performers—so that the two groups can learn from each other.

Bill Foster, the president of The  Jazz Network, believes that this program will, “reacquaint Jazz to the community.” Finally, The bands will receive a stipend, so that they can record their works, and will perform in traditional and nontraditional venues to generate excitement for jazz and showcase the best Detroit has to offer.

The competition is expected to launch in November 2013 with events throughout the city.

This project is one of 56 winners of the Knight Arts Challenge, a community-wide contest to engage and enrich Detroit through the arts.

“We hope that this program will build on Detroit's rich legacy in Jazz to bring new interest to the art form and highlight the city's local talent,” said Dennis Scholl, Knight Foundation’s vice president for arts.

To find out more about Jazz-Off Detroit join us for the Jazz Network Foundation 22nd anniversary celebration, September 20th  and 21st  at  the Virgil Carr Center, 311 East Grand River, Downtown Detroit.
